My sewing, like my online activity, takes place in spurts. I am overly active for 2 days and go on sleep mode for the rest of the week. The result of one such spurt in activity is a super recycled summer wardrobe for the kiddos.
This time, I did not go closet shopping and pick out my old T-shirt. Instead a while back I had attacked, literally, the clearance rack at my local Walmart, Target and Forever 21. Result: End of Season knit T-shirts for $2. And these are lovely soft knits that is pretty good summer fabric and will not sweat you out.
You can do these with your old t-shirts as well. Here are a few ideas for recycling adult's t-shirts into kids dresses...
So, the fabric from these 2 t-shirts became 3 mini dresses, and the sleeves became scarves!

Here's a tip when you go shopping for fabric at the garment aisle. Choose the largest size available. For the same cost as an XS shirt you get twice that fabric with an XXXL shirt!
This was a beautiful smocked and embroidered top I found at Walmart for a $1.50! I wanted a design that would preserve the front embroidery, which was rather large when you convert it to kid size. So I came up with side ties...
Another find last fall, when the stores were clearing out the summer apparel. A smocked swim cover-up. The smocked part along with a little bit of the skirt became a top/mini dress for Big Sister. Remaining black fabric contributed to the top and bottom of the other 2 dresses. The pink and black stripes fabric is from my old tank top...
I used 2 of these tank tops, one to make a legging and the other to make the bottom of a frock. And I have saved the white straps, which I can use as bias strips.
The white turtle neck was a little thicker than the other t-shirts. But it was knit cotton. See the three leggings...? There were all made from the same turtle neck! How? The 2 sleeves were pretty wide enough (3XL). So the sleeves made one small legging, the left and right seams made the other one, the center of the garment made the third legging. Pretty scrappy, huh? Now all that's left of the white shirt is the turtle neck...I mean just the turtle neck. And that can be a good tube top for a 3-6 month old!
